WE ARE VERY PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT CITY COLLEGE NOTTINGHAM ARE ON THE NEW APPRENTICESHIP REGISTER!

What do I need to consider when recruiting an apprentice?

You will need to give the apprentice at least 30 hours/week, and provide a mentor for the apprentice who they can work alongside, to gain the knowledge and skills needed for a career within the industry.

The apprentice is required to complete tasks and assignments set them by the assessor, government guidelines say ‘off the job training’ should be 20% of their total working hours, should be spent on them doing this. 1 day a week in college covers this, but if they are not required to come into college then you will need to allow efficient time for this away from their usual role.

What is the cost?

The recruitment service we provide is 100% free. The National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50, but you can pay more if you wish or increment their wage over their time with you.

If you are a levy paying employer the apprenticeship qualification delivery is fully funding, as you are paying additional tax, but if you are a none levy employer (has approx less than 250 employers, under 3 million yearly salary expenses), the government will now only fund 90% of the qualification for candidates that are over the age of 19. Therefore, there is a 10% contribution requirement from the employer, to pay towards the candidates training, we as a college have to take at least this cost. *16-18 year old are fully funded so no contribution is required.

To give you an idea of costs please see the table below:

Qualification Level Cost Duration
Business Administration 2 £200 12 months
Business Administration 3 £250 18 months
Management 3/4 £200 18 months

There is at the minute still grant funding available for candidates that are 16-24 years of age, which you may be able to apply for. We would need to find out candidate details to see what you will be eligible for:

  • Age Grant £1,500 (due to run out very soon)
  • NAG Nottingham Apprenticeship Grant £1,000
  • NJF £3,000-£4,000 if you recruit a candidate who was in receipt of benefits

*We can now accept people on to an apprenticeship who has already obtained a degree, as long as the apprenticeship is a different role to what their degree is in.
